This cake is David's favorite cake from childhood.
1. Combine boiling water, dates, and soda in a bowl. Let cool. The dates need to soak until mushy.
2. Cream 1 cup butter and sugar until fluffy.
3. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat until fluffy.
4. Add date mixture.
5. Sift dry ingredients together. Add to date mixture.
6. Stir in pecans.
7. Divide into 3 8 or 9 inch pans. Bake 350 for 45 minutes or until done.
8. Glaze cake with a mixture of melted butter and powdered sugar thinned with cream.
