This is the real, original recipe.
Preheat oven to 350.
Chill egg whites. Beat the egg yolks until just combined. Beat in the condensed milk, then the lime juice a little at a time, then the zest. The mixture will thicken. Pour the filling into the crust and bake 10-15 minutes until firm.
To make the meringue, beat egg whites with salt and cream of tartar until foamy. Keep beating and slowly add sugar until stiff peaks form.
Remove pie from oven and let cool. Cover pie with meringue and brown for 2-5 minutes until meringue is slightly browned. (Serves 6-8)

twright780 1y agoKey lime pie is my fiancé's favorite and he likes "real" key lime pie. With recipe I took the #1 spot away from a local Florida restaurant and he raves about this pie! Is super easy to make and sooooooo good. I add extra lime juice because I like a stronger taste. The meringue is a perfect balance to the tangy pie, but I make it with vanilla and sugar and it's perfect! A must-have for your recipe box!
