This tastes even better reheated the next day.

"Couldn't find my recipe! Tried yours and it was great, just like the ones I eat in Germany years ago! For those who didn't like the cloves or allspice, just a little and let it cook the first 15 minutes. Then if you need more, add it when you add the apples, a little at a time."

- Kathmagee

Ingredients

Are you making this?
1 head Red cabbage; about 2 pounds
3 tablespoons Red wine vinegar; or red wine
3 tablespoons Water
2 tablespoon Sugar
4 slices Bacon; chopped
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 medium Granny smith apple; peeled and cubed
pinch Pepper
pinch Cloves; ground, can substitute allspice

Original recipe makes 4

Servings

Preparation

1. Chiffonade the red cabbage, peel and cube the apple.

2. Heat bacon in a saucepan over medium high heat. When it starts to crisp, add the red cabbage, vinegar (or wine), water, salt, pepper and cloves. Stir to combine.

3. Sprinkle the sugar over the top, but do not stir. Cover and turn down the heat to low, simmer for about 15 minutes.

4. Add apples and stir, cook for about 5 minutes more.

This actually tastes best when reheated the next day, so don't hesitate to make this one ahead of time.

I have used this recipe 4 times and it comes out perfect every time. It's easy to make and gets a ton of compliments every time. Goes great with meat and potato or rice dishes. Who would have thought the kids would like cabbage with dinner.

I made this today. It was very easy and tasty. It was the perfect compliment to a lamb roast and basil/cream mashed potatoes. I am looking forward to trying the reheated leftovers.

Something was weird in it. Maybe the cloves? Whatever it was burned my nostrils./
