Yes, you heard it! Plain old hardtack. I couldn't believe the recipe was in my mom's recipe box as well. This was a childhood ration of seafaring tales. Great served hot from the pan with butter.. hint-hint: great for camping.
You can actually buy Civil-War era hardtack cutters nowadays!
1. Mix dry ingredients well
2. in separate container, mix wet ingredients
3. combine mixter with dry ingredients
4. When dough is thoroughly mixed, form it into eight balls of equal size and roll each one out on a floured board (thickness will depend on size of your pan)
5. Transfer each 12 inch circle to a lightly greased pizza pan.
Pat and smooth dough pieces and bake 375 until golden brown.
Use pegged rolling pin if you can find one.
Or you can use standard rolling pin, jar or large drinking glass.
