Sales of canned tomatoes and tomatoe paste indicate a lot of people make their own spaghetti sauce. With a homemade sauce, you can avoid some of the additives that commercial sauces contain and cut sodium content, too if desired.

"This is basically what I do with my sauce, except I add a lot more seasoning. Personal preferences, really. I use lite salt or Nu Salt, 2-3 stevia packets to cut the acidity of the tomatoes. As for seasoning, I use generous amounts of basil, oregano, garlic, smaller amounts of thyme and marjoram. "

Ingredients

Are you making this?
1 clove Garlic
1/2 medium Onion
28 ounces tomatoes; crushed, no salt added
6 ounce Tomato paste
1 cup Water
2 teaspoons Basil; dried
1/4 teaspoon Black pepper
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 tablespoon olive oil

Servings

Preparation

Heat the olive oil in a 6 quart saucepan over medium heat. Brown the garlic. Add the onions and saute until they are transparent. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste blended with water, basil, pepper, and salt. Simmer for 30 minutes over low heat stirring often.

Notes

I wanted a tomato sauce without the additives and salt in the commercial ones so I gave this one a try on my cabbage rolls. Turned out great. I'll be using it from now on when I need a tomatoe sauce.
