2 1/2 cups Granulated sugar
2.1 cups Water; 500 ml
1 Lemon; small, meyer lemon if available, sliced (remove the seeds)
17 1/2 tbsp Butter; a little over 2 sticks (250 grams)
1 Egg
1 cup yogurt; plain
4 cups Flour; sifted
1 tbsp Baking powder; sifted
pinch of salt
walnuts; halves, broken

Original recipe makes 19 Servings



First make the syrup. Mix water and sugar, then add the lemon slices without the seeds. Stirring constantly, when the water starts to boil, cook for 8-10 minutes, then remove from heat and cool.

In small mixing bowl, mix together flour, baking powder and salt. Whisk the butter and egg, then add the yogurt and stir until blended. Slowly add the dry flour mixture and stir or mash or squeeze together until you achieve play-dough like consistency. Next, roll into walnut-size balls. Press each ball on the grater, then press and pull off by squeezing sides while pulling off grater.

Place hurmasice on non-greased baking sheet. Bake in heated oven at 390 degrees Fahrenheit until they get a nice golden color (about 25-35 minutes). While hot, press walnut halves into middle (if desired), and then pour the chilled syrup on top.

Let cool, then refrigerate and serve chilled.
