Suggest a better description1. Combine lentils and split peas in a saucepan and add the water, chillies, turmeric and onion slices. Bring to boil then lower heat, cover and simmer for about 30 mins, or until lentils are soft and water has evaporated (I added a bit more water whilst simmering to give 30 mins.) Check a few times and stir, so doesn't stick to pan.
2. Mash lentils with back of spoon. When nearly smooth, add tomatoes and season with salt to taste. Mix well.
3. Heat oil in frying pan and add mustard and cumin seeds, garlic and curry leaves. Crumble in dried chillies (mine wouldn't crumble so I chopped roughly) and stir in salt. Fry over low heat, stirring constantly until garlic browns.
4. Pour oil and spices over lentils and cover pan. After 5 mins, mix well and serve immediately!
