Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cook noodles to al dente.Cook and stir butter, onion, salt and pepper over medium heat until onion is slightly tender. Stir in flour. Cook over low heat until smooth and bubbly. Stir in milk. Heat to boiling and cook for one minute to thicken. Remove from heat. Allow to cool slightly, then stir in cheese until melted. Combine noodles and sauce in ungreased 1 1/2 quart casserole and bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes.
