Good Winter apple dessert


1/3 cup All-purpose flour
1/2 cup Packed light brown sugar
1/3 cup regular oats
1/4 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter; cut into small pieces, chilled, or 1 stick of margarine
3 tablespoon Walnuts; chopped
7 cups Rome apple; (about 3 pounds), sliced, peeled
1/4 cup Maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon Ground cinnamon

Original recipe makes 9



Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Combine flour, sugar, oats, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon in a medium bowl; cut in butter with a pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture is crumbly. Stir in walnuts.

Combine apple and remaining ingredients in a large bowl; toss well. Spoon apple mixture into an 8-inch square baking dish or 1 1/2-quart casserole. Sprinkle with crumb mixture. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm. (Yield: 9 servings)

This was great with just regualr baking apples. We couldn't really taste the maple from the maple syrup, but it added the perfect amount of sweetness. This was delicious and sure to take the place of our old Apple Crisp recipe. Might double the crumb mixture next time and make in a large shallow dish so more of the crumb mixture covers it.

I served warm with vanilla icecream. Used gravenstein apples and baked not quite as long, apples are not so mushy then. Pure maple syrup added and very nice flavour.
