This was the house cookie at the Delforge House, a bed and breakfast in Fredricksburg, Texas. The owner of the house developed this recipe with Julia Child for the Brer Rabbit Molasses Company and it was featured on their bottles for years.
Melt shortening in 3-4 quart saucepan over low heat (or in microwave), let cool.
Add sugar, molasses and egg, beat well.
Sift dry ingredients and add to first mix.
Mix well.
Chill.
Form 1 inch balls. Roll in sugar and place on greased cookie sheets 2 inches apart.
Bake at 375-degrees for 8-10 minutes.
I make them all 1/2 a tablespoon and bake them at 375-degrees for 5 1/2 minutes for nice, chewy cookies.
