"Years ago this recipe appeared on the back of OuakerOats cornmeal box--not anymore. Other recipes are not as good. So simple, you can memorize the ingredients!"
Combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add milk, egg and shortening. Beat until fairly smooth, about 1 minute. Bake in greased 8-inch square baking pan in a preheated hot oven (425 degrees) for about 20-25 minutes. NOTES : I use 1/2 cup sugar and bake in a 9-inch square baking pan. CarmenE 1 year agoExcellent cornbread. Made as directed except used only 2 tablespoons if sugar. Served with pinto beans cooked with ham. Yum!
kelligist 2 years agoThis cornbread has the texture of cake! Delicious! When I want a more traditional style, I cut the sugar in half, and substitute buttermilk for milk.
