Cream together the shortening and brown sugar. Add in eggs, vanilla, 1 cup of flour, cinnamon and cloves. In another bowl dissolve baking soda with hot water. Alternately add liquid and remaining flour with original mix until it becomes thick (may need to mix by hand). Add in raisins, nuts and oatmeal. Drop but the tablespoons onto a greased cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
