Heat oil in a large stock pot over medium heat.
Peel and slice onions
Add onions and cook til translucent. DO NOT BROWN. Add water. bouillon cubes and whiskey. Simmer about 2 hours. Taste and add more bouillon if needed. Simmer an additional 30 minutes.
