Suggest a better description1. Adjust oven rack to center shelf and pre-heat to 350 degrees. Rub bottom and sides of shallow baking dish with Garlic. Mince remaining garlic and set aside.
2. Bring half-and-half, salt, pepper, nutmeg, cayenne, potatoes and reserved garlic to a boil in a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally with wooded spoon (liquid will only barely come to top of potatoes). Reduce heat and simmer until liquid thickens, about 2 minutes.
3. Pour potato mixture into prepared dish; shake or use a fork to distribute potatoes evenly. Gently press down potatoes until submerged in liquid.
4. Bake until top is golden brown (basting after 25 minutes minutes).
5. After first 50 minutes, sprinkle top evenly with Gruyere Cheese and then with Cheddar. Cook an additional 25 minutes or until cheese forms a nice crust. Tolal cooking time 75 minutes.
