Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Make a paste with coloring and cocoa and add to mixture. Add salt and flour with buttermilk and vanilla. Alternately add soda and vinegar and blend in. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Bake in 2 8-inch greased and floured pans.
Cook flour and milk on low heat until thick. Cool. Cream sugar and butter and vanilla until fluffy. Add to flour mixture. Beat until like whipped cream.

adw899 3y agoI liked this recipe alot, made cupcakes instead of cake. I would bake if doing cupcakes for 20 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. I would also add 1/2 cup of applesauce for a more moist cake.

Autumn1193 4y agoVery good recipe. I agree that it needs the amount of baking soda and I'm not a big fan of the icing recipe... other than that I love the taste and consistency of the cake
