Ingredients

Are you making this? 
1/2 cup shortening
2 Eggs
1 1/2 cups Sugar
2 tbsp cocoa
2 oz. red food coloring
2 1/4 cup Flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 tbsp vinegar
1 cup buttermilk
Icing:
3 tbsp flour
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup milk
1 cup Butter
1 cup Granulated sugar

Original recipe makes 8

Servings  

Preparation

Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Make a paste with coloring and cocoa and add to mixture. Add salt and flour with buttermilk and vanilla. Alternately add soda and vinegar and blend in. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Bake in 2 8-inch greased and floured pans.

Icing:

Cook flour and milk on low heat until thick. Cool. Cream sugar and butter and vanilla until fluffy. Add to flour mixture. Beat until like whipped cream.

How can u bake this without baking powder or baking soda unless u r using self rising flour and then it should say self rising

Very good recipe. I agree that it needs the amount of baking soda and I'm not a big fan of the icing recipe... other than that I love the taste and consistency of the cake
