Put shortening and salt into a cup and fill to top with boiling water.
Sift flour and baking powder together twice. When first mixture is lukewarm, stir in beaten egg and work in flour mixture, kneeding into a smooth elastic dough. Roll out thin. Cut into any shape desired and fry in deep hot fat. Drain and roll in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar. Serve with honey.
Roll the dough out as thin as possible. If it isn't puffing up, it's probably too thick.
