1. Combine dates and water in saucepan.
2. Cook until reduced to jam consistency, stirring often.
3. In mixer combine margarine and sugar. Beat until fluffy.
4. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix well.
5. Add date mixture.
6. Combine flour and soda.
7. Add to date mixture. Stir thoroughly by hand. Pour into greased 9 x 13 inch pan.
8. Bake 325 convection 375 regular oven for 20-25 minutes.
9. While cake is hot poke with a toothpick and pour caramel sauce over cake.
Sauce
1. Combine sugar, cream, and margarine in small saucepan.
2. Bring to a boil. Cook for 5 minutes.
3. Add vanilla.
