1. Saute onion in 2-3 tablespoons of canola oil until the pieces are a bit beyond translucent but not brown. Cool the onions completely before removing them from the pan with a slotted spoon and stirring them into a waffle batter.
2. Cook in a hot, greased waffle iron until golden brown.
