From Blodwen Oustad. Classic Welsh fare -- NOT the scones you find in pastry shops all across America. These fly off the cooling racks at home.
Put dry ingredients in large mixing bowl, mix lightly with a pastry blender.
With the pastry blender, cut in shortening until very fine.
Moisten with the egg/milk mixture and vanilla.
Add currants.
Roll out like pastry on floured board.
Cut into shapes (rounds) and bake on griddle or frying pan set on medium heat until lightly browned, between 3-6 minutes per side, depending on temperature of pan.
Cool on racks.
