Grandma Lohr's icing with soft chocolate cake
Combine the milk and flour in a small saucepan and cook over low heat. The mixture will become pasty. The key is to use low to medium heat and whisk constantly. The mixture should be smooth, not clumpy.
Put the flour mixture in the fridge or freezer until cool.
Blend the sugar, Crisco, butter, and vanilla. The key to this part is two things. One, it helps to have the Crisco and butter softened. I never soften in a microwave. Plan ahead, and let them sit out while you are preparing the cake. Two, you need to beat the hell out of it. My grandmother beat it for 5 minutes with hand mixers. I'm not so tough. I have an electric mixer. I basically put it in and let it go to town. Why so long? You should get it to the point that it is not gritty. It will happen, just be patient. Get it as close to not gritty as you can...then...
Beat the cooled flour mixture into the sugar mixture. Another note, if the flour mixture is not cooled well, it will 'melt' some of the sugar mix making it too soupy. I've made this mistake before. Blend well for a very light creamy icing.
Final note, I've also tried lowering the sugar a bit because some people hate sweet icing. It's up to your preference. And i make double the flour mixture as well, just in case I'm having trouble with the grit issue.
