Ready in 45 minutes
This is a recipe that has been in our family for years and years. Our mom used to make these for us when we were kids. The filling is more like a devil dog filling not a frosting. Very Yummy! I use this same filling on angel food cake too!
Cakes: Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs. Mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl, then in another small bowl mix milk and vanilla. Alternate the dry and wet ingredients into the creamed mixture. Our Mom always lined the cookie sheets with wax paper so I still do that. It is not necessary but it does prevent the bottoms from getting too brown. Drop by heaping tablespoons onto cookie sheet and Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes, cool on racks.
Filling: In a small sauce pan add milk and flour. Cook on low heat stirring constantly until it becomes like a thick paste. In mixing bowl beat sugar, shortening and butter until creamy, add Vanilla. Add warm paste to the mixing bowl and beat on high speed for 5 minutes or until the sugar is dissolved and nice and fluffy. Put filling between 2 cakes and enjoy! :)

cookingmom1993 3y agoLove these, grew up with them. The filling is also good on angel food cake for frosting.
bizshetler 3y agoPretty good for the cake part but the filling is perfect. Added peanut butter to mine.
ADJC1997 3y agoI liked the filling, but I must not have made the pie part correctly. Might re-try to see if I messed up.
Lynn1775 4y agoTook to picnic, none left! Made lots of dirty bowls & pan but basically easy. Loved the filling, way better than the marshmallow-creme type. We PA Dutch say we invented these but some say Maine, delicious either way.
Whitedove 4y agoJust made these. We loved them. So good. Fun and I thought easy to make.
wickedrebel 4y agoI love whoopie pies! This one comes the closest to the ones like to eat. The cake is perfect, and filling is great. Next time I make these, will try some flavors in the filling...peanut butter, or maybe raspberry. Thanks for sharing!!
Doyleheath 4y agoI'm in a quandary. 17 pies left and 5 hours to bedtime. Could be trouble. Great pies!!! Vanilla milk and flour roux are both interesting techniques that I haven't used before.
