Subject: Food Allergies

This morning I had my 4 1/2 year old daughter tested for food allergies.  Food allergies run in our family; and she has asthma and eczema.  The results were very interesting!
She has a food allergy to green peas.  On a scale of 1 to 5, she has a 4.  So, it is not like we need to carry an epi pen (like people with peanut allergies).  She has a moderate allergy towards green beans, cantaloupe, barley, and strawberries.  The only food she really likes out of all of those is strawberries.  The other foods she really does not care for at all.  I have to laugh about the green peas because she has never liked them- even as a baby.  We have made her eat them for 4 years now.  She's off the hook now! I guess you should listen to your kids likes and dislikes!  I will be interested to see how she does once we limit her on these foods.  Does anyone else have experience with food allergies?

What made you decide to get her checked for allergies?  Was she showing signs?   I haven't had mine tested, as they don't show any outward signs of being allergic.  Not that the picky eaters would probably ever show signs!  LOL

I don't like green peas myself....so being allergic to that may not bother me too much!!  LOL

I got tested for allergies once a number of years ago because of respiratory issues. While it identified a couple of things that I indeed reacted to there was also a long list of other "probables" that I "might have trouble with".

I got the feeling that allergists could blame a broken leg on an allergy to car bumpers and suggest desensitisation treatments to relieve it. <grin>

So I avoid the "biggies" and take an occasional antihistamine for all the others.

Ha ha...I think you are right about them wanting to associate everything to allergies.  My nephew was supposedly allergic to peanuts (even though they never really tested him on it).  One day he was at my house and ate a Snickers...I about died....he looked at me like I was crazy when I flipped out.  Yeah.....he isn't allergic to peanuts! LOL.

My son has a little girl who has the allergy to gluten.  I should get her mom on here...cause she is a PRO at cooking for her daughter.  She made this awesome pumpkin parfaits when her daughter couldn't have the pumpkin pie at our school Thanksgiving feast.  She has got her recipes down pat, and I am sure her daughter doesn't even know the difference!

That should have said my son has a little girl in his class.....He is 6.....he doesn't have a little girl himself! LOL

This reminded me of a story. During a recent visit with our grandchildren, the 10-month-old was hungry so Mom was nursing him. Granddaughter (almost 4) was playing nearby. She took one of her dolls, sat next to Mom, pulled up her shirt and "fed her baby". I couldn't get to the camera quickly enough but it was a precious site.

By all means, invite his friend's mom to share her knowledge and ideas with us. Gluten intolerance is a fairly common problem and I'm sure there are others who would appreciate suggestions.
