Subject: Alternative to Crisco

Hi everybody, I've just discovered this site and I'm loving it!

A few cookie recipes call for Crisco(butter flavour)? but here in Ireland we don't have it, any sugestions for a replacement? I thought it would have been butter but some recipes call for both. Thanks in advance!

Do you have any solid vegetable shortening in Ireland??  If so that is all Crisco is.  If you have one and it is not butter flavored you can still use it.  Just cut the amount of the shortening a little annd use some butter to make up the difference.  I have even just used the plain vegetable shortening and things turned out ok.

Thanks buffyg,

Ah I have an idea what I'm looking now, The only time I've heard of shortening was when working way back in a certain big fast food chain. Thanks for the info!

Sometimes lard can be substituted for shortening.  It works very well in pie crust.  Good luck with your cookies!

Yes, we really should get those glossary/substitution terms in there.

I hope it's not to late to answer. When a recipe calls for Crisco or shortening, I use margarine.I like the flavor of butter. I always use butter and margarine especially when making cookies.
Hope this helps.

Just a note we've now added a link in the Food Glossary search that lets you suggest a term for our food writers to write about.  (You'll see that link after you do a Glossary Search, using the searchbox in the upper right.)
