What's for dinner?
Bistro Pork Saute
I am a  wife of almost 27 years with 2 beautiful teenage daughters.  My Mom gave me the passion to cook when she let me use her old BHG cookbook & just expiriment with recipies, I miss her, she's been gone since 7/20/10.  My father, who was a passionate eater and ice cream lover used to be the victim of my expiriments when my Mom worked 2nd shift for many years as a nurse.  He could give great advice and was so funny when my meal was.. nasty, I sure miss him since 4/6/08.   I love to ride my Street Glide and and drive my Mustangs -- am a huge motorhead for just about anything that will go fast!  Being a passionate cook is my flip side who loves to watch my family and friends enjoy my efforts is what I love.  I enjoy using spices and cook to taste mostly, measuring is so boring.  I love to workout at Curves every day to burn off the stress of my  job as a public servant with a HUGE caseload.  I found a bonus to Curves, I've made some new friends and found many other cooks too and lost 50 pounds.  I live in a small town and wish our grocery store had more exotic items and fresher produce, ie the only shrimp you can get at IGA is cooked, lots of prepackaged produce and really awful brown spotted beef from them. It makes it worth the 15 minute drive to Hasselbach's Meats and the extra $$....

I am a true savory lover, skip the desserts and give me a great sauce.  I am a huge fan of Ina Garten and Giada DeLaurentis.  However, my continued journey is finding lower calorie, not boring and healthy receipes as I just lost almost 50 pounds.  I had to give up cooking for a bit while starting my diet because I just can't  stop nibbling.  But going on vacation with my 3 fab girlfriends and a bad cholesterol report has changed my life.  I love the new me and found I can eat my savory, just in moderation.  I love the process of cooking, enjoy making most anything and it is relaxing.  I never bake, no one likes dessert at my house.  I am delighted that my 15 year old daughter is discovering my passion for cooking, she makes killer quacamole and just discovered my electric pressure cooker.  My oldest, goes to college and hates to cook, lol!  She is much to my delight discovering she HAS to cook and has asked me for advice finally.  I was delighted when I shared with her my Mom's cookbook I learned from recently.   I look forward to seeing new recipes onBig Oven.com.

Perfect Peeled Hardboiled Eggs

Perfect Peeled Hardboiled Eggs

Worked beautifully on 1 dozen eggs, 8 out of 12 came right out of the shell. The rest, I just had to open the thin inner membrane and they slipped right out. No green ring either, beautiful yellow yolks! I used eggs that were about 5 days from expiration so they were aged. I can't wait to give it a whirl on newer eggs and not have to sit some aside to age for hard boiled eggs every few weeks. Eggs and fresh baked bread have always been my Achilles heel, I've tried a TON of recipes each. Check off eggs!

Bleu Cheese Stuffed Hamburgers

Bleu Cheese Stuffed Hamburgers

Very tasty. I didn't make the stuffed burger, it is simply too much of a portion for me, but I sure kept the blue cheese part and just put it on top at the end of making the burger. Horseradish adds a nice flavor to the blue cheese.

The lime was a cool twist. I added some bacon and was out of curry so garam marsala went in. Nice recipe and fast prep.

Beef Chili with Beans

Beef Chili with Beans

Loved it, great spice and I didn't add the cayenne because my husband had a sore throat, but added 2 cans of beer for more soup LOL! All I had was black beans and green peppers, always have fried hamburger on hand in the freezer, made mine in the crockpot while cleaning the camper all afternoon..A new fast go to recipe for me now, beats my own chili recipe.

Caldo Gallego (Spanish White Bean Soup)

Caldo Gallego (Spanish White Bean Soup)

I liked the recipe a lot! I had to switch the kale to spinach, salt pork to pork jowl and our chirizo only comes in nationwide varieties that break up like ground beef. I carefully rolled the chirizo into meatballs and browned them so they would hold up. We have a really basic grocery store because I am convinced no one cooks in our town LOL. They will special order stuff for me with a smile though if I plan in advance. Very tasty recipe!

Baked French Onion Soup

Baked French Onion Soup

It was a very authentic, savory recipe that I took to my girlfriends dinner and slumber party. We cook and watch movies, theme, Julie and Julia. I added fresh minced garlic - 3 cloves to the onions when cooking an basil to the seasonings. I used gruyre and mozzarella cheese to top. Thank you for the excellent recipe.

I am fighting my kryptonite...breads.... Yeast are the worst for me but my friend at work inspired me to visit Beer Bread and not store bought. It is made for pennies on the dollar and she said she gets a lot of bang for her buck on it. The recipe comes from her Navy days dorm room cookbook.
