About me
Hi
I'm a 30 something woman living in the north of England. Don't ask what I do for a living, you won't believe me
but lets just say it involves jet engines (yup, great big ones like they have on planes lol).
My passion for cooking started when I was very young, helping my grandmother in the kitchen whenever I could. Not only did that come with very direct benefits (come on, we've ALL licked the bowl clean from a chocolate cake mix) but she laid the foundations of what was to become my biggest passion in life, cooking.
I learned the old fashioned way for the most part, from my mother and grandmother in their kitchens which is probably why you won't see many low-fat etc recipes in my listings. 20 years ago, there wasn't such a demand for low-carb/low fat/atkins friendly/vegan food... you ate what you were given. None of this mechanically reclaimed junk food either (don't get me started
), I was brought up on old stalwart recipes; Mince and dumplings, Toad-in-the-hole, Lamb broth. My belief is it's not the kind of food you eat but the quantity which piles the weight on. I eat what I want, when I want and for 5'11" and a little under 11 stone, I'm not what you could call overweight. So roll on with the butter (it's the secret of life, you know
).
I'm now teaching my daughter about cooking. The importance of a balanced diet, dump the ready meals and make things from scratch. Not only do they taste miles better, but theres no nasty chemicals and additives in home cooked food, something which I try to eliminate from our diet as much as possible. England is in a bad way with food at the moment. For a country that spends around 40p on a childs school meal and eats more ready meals than the rest of Europe put together (by 2003, incidentally), we really should be trying harder. I'm trying to
I hope you enjoy my "no-nonsense" recipes, and if you have any questions about any of them, please feel free to mail me.
My Favorite Foods
I'm quite eclectic when it comes to food, it really would be faster and easier to list the things I don't like
One thing I do try to do is always go for organic produce if it's available. There was a big stink in the UK a few years back over organic foods. For some bizarre reason, the tabloid newspapers slated it saying it was no good for losing weight etc. Umm, that wasn't the point. Organic butter is just as fatty as non-organic butter, the difference is it's natural. The only thing I can say is at least when you have an organically grown onion, it jolly well tastes like an onion ought to, and it's grown without the nasty pesticides.
