Alcohol
is considered a macronutrient because it provides energy. Alcohol has
about 7 calories per gram, the measurement of energy. The calories
obtained from alcohol are considered to be "empty" because they contain
no beneficial nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals. Beer, wine, and
distilled liquors (such as whisky, vodka, rum, and gin) are common
dietary sources of alcohol. Alcohol is a central nervous system
depressant and acts as a mild anesthetic and tranquilizer. It is toxic
in large quantities.
