Have Your Cake and a Donut Too
Let BigOven help bring the donut shop experience right to your home kitchen. With just a few ingredients, you’ll have a dozen delicious donuts ready to devour in 30 minutes. We believe in the expression of having your cake and a donut too.
For the Donuts:
First things first, preheat the oven to 350 F(177 C). Spray the donut pans with non-stick spray and set aside for later. Make sure that there's enough spray to cover each mold, we don't want the donuts to stick.
Whisky Business
Whisk the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a medium bowl. For those who are gluten-free, use almond flour or a gluten-free flour blend.
In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, brown sugar, and milk together until smooth.
Pro Tip: Use room-temperature eggs and milk for better mixing and rising.
Add the melted butter and vanilla, whisking until fully combined.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix with a rubber spatula until just combined. Be sure not to overmix. The batter will be thick.
Spoon or pipe the batter into the donut pans, filling about ¾ full. Be sure not to overfill to achieve an even donut shape.
Pro Tip: Save time on the clean-up by using a piping bag to pipe the batter into the donut pan. No piping bag on hand? Spoon the mixture into a zip-top bag and cut a corner off the bottom of the bag for a homemade piping bag. You’ll have an easier time placing the batter in the molds and save time on clean-up.
Bake for 8-10 minutes. The donuts will be light on top and lightly golden on the edges. Take a finger and gently press into the donut. If it bounces back into shape, they’re done. If it doesn’t, give it a little more time to bake.
Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before topping with glaze.
For the Glaze:
Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla in a small bowl until completely smooth. Add milk one tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached. Mix in food coloring if desired. We used pink to add a vibrant color.
Pro Tip: For a variety of glazes, you can customize with different flavors like chocolate, mint, or whatever you’d like. Just use the glaze as the base and add flavoring as needed.
When I Dip, You Dip, We Dip
Once the donuts have cooled to the touch, dip them into the glaze. Shake off any excess.
Place on a wire rack, add sprinkles if desired, and allow to dry for at least 30 minutes before serving. You can add different types of zest or toppings to enhance the flavors and texture. Crunchy toppings like cookie crumbles or zests like orange or lemon are great options. We added some rainbow sprinkles to add little pops of color with the bright pink glaze.
Pro Tip: Don’t touch or move the donuts until the glaze is completely dry to avoid cracking.
Presentation:
We all love Insta-worthy food. Up your presentation by placing the donuts on a nice plate. You can even use a food-safe paper box for a more authentic bakery feel.
