Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla and mix until just combined. Mix together the flour and baking powder, and add it to the mixture in intervals. Mix until amalgamated.
Divide batter into 4 parts, shaping each into a disc. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator for 1 hour. Roll out with rolling pin between two sheets of wax paper; cookies should be 1/4 inch thick. Take cookie cutters and cut out cookies. Re-roll scraps and cut out. Place on parchment-papered cookie sheet, and bake 7-8 minutes until just golden.
