This recipe came from my grandmother's recipe file (Mama's). It was labeled Bobbie Dodson, one of her close friends.
Prepare Angel Food or sponge cake per package directions. While cake bakes, fix candy brittle part of topping.
In a saucepan, mix sugar, coffee, Karo and water. Bring to a boil and cook to hard candy stage, 285-290. Remove from heat, add soda all at once and stir vigorously, but only til mixture blends and pulls away from sides of pan. Quickly pour foamy mixture into butter 8x8 pan. Do not spread or stir. Cool
Tap bottom of pan to remove candy. Crush into crumbs. When cake is thoroughly cool, whip cream with 1 T sugar and vanilla. Spread half between layers and remainder over top and sides. Cover with candy crumbs. Trim with almond halves poking in porcupine style all over the cake.
