Suggest a better descriptionBoil the beans in the water for 2 minutes; remove from heat and let stand for 1 hour.
Add the ham bone, garlic and bay leaf to the beans; cover and simmer for 2 hours or until beans are almost tender. Add the vegetables and salt and pepper, to taste; simmer for 1 hour or until vegetables and beans are tender, but not mushy. Remove the ham bone, cut off meat and dice, return to beans. Reheat soup to almost boiling, then remove bay leaf and serve.
