Well worth it!
Combine the apples and cider in a large saucepan. Cook over moderate heat until the apples are very soft. Cool slightly and puree in a food processor or food mill.
Return the apple puree to the saucepan. Add the sugar and spices. Cook, stirring occasionally, over low heat for 2 to 3 hours, until the mixture is dark brown and very thick.
Jar and process immediately.
