Using an electric hand beater, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition, then add sifted flour, baking powder, nutmeg, salt and enough buttermilk to make a thick batter.
Fold in cheese, nuts and apple and mix well.
Pour batter into a 22 x 12 cm loaf pan (or use 8 mini loaf pans) sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.
Bake in a preheated oven at 160 degrees Celsius for 60 - 70 minutes - or 20 - 30 minutes if using mini loaf pans.
Cook until risen and firm to the touch.
Leave to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
