Mix together first four ingredients, then put half this crumb mixture in a 9 X 13" pan.
In a saucepan combine 1 cup sugar, 3 tbsp cornstarch, 1/4 tsp salt and 1 cup water. Cook, stirring constantly until thickened.
Add 1 tsp vanilla. Pare and slice 6 medium apples. Add sliced apples to cooked mixture, toss lightly to coat apples., then
spread this evenly over crumbs. Put remaining crumbs over apples.
Bake (350) in moderate oven 40 to 50 minutes.
May do 1/2 recipe - put in large bread pan. If apples are frozen bake about 50 minutes at 350.
Very good with nutmeg and cinnamon to apple mixture.
