Melt butter in large saucepan; add oil. Cook several minutes over medium heat. Add onions and saute until golden. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to low and cook until thick, approximately 40 minutes. Makes about 4 1/2 cups.
