Found this from Saveur, pretty easy and tasty.
1) Snap off the bottom ends of each asparagus spear, then cut into pieces.
2) Put asparagus and chicken stock (or I've used water instead) and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to simmer and cook until soft, 10-15 minutes.
3) Reserve 2 cups of broth, and puree the remaining broth with the asparagus. Set aside.
4) In a small pan, melt butter and saute chopped garlic until lightly braised.
5) Add flour and stir constantly with a whisk for ~2 minutes.
6) Add reserved broth, and simmer on medium, stirring, until smooth and thickened, ~5 minutes.
7) Add asparagus puree, bring to a simmer and gradually add milk.
8) Simmer until appropriate consistency, season with salt and pepper.
