Homemade and delicious refrained beans like grandma used to make. Easy recipe is simple to double or half.
Soak beans in a bowl with enough cold water to generously cover beans. Let soak over night or for at least 7 hours. Once soaked, rinse in cold water and strain.
Cook chopped bacon and whole garlic cloves in a large stockpot over medium heat until bacon is golden brown and all fat is rendered. Add soaked beans and Worcestershire sauce. Add water to cover beans by at least one inch. Boil over medium heat then reduce heat to medium low. Gently boil stirring occasionally for three hours.
Scoop beans into mixer bowl along with any bacon bits and garlic. Reserve cooking water. Beat on low until beans are mashed. Beat on medium-high speed until you achieve desired consistency adding as much of the cooking water as needed. Add lard, shortening or butter to the stock pot and place over medium heat. Return mashed beans to the stock pot to fry for 10 minutes stirring several times. Serve and enjoy.
