Sift dry ingredients together and blend with shortening, using hands, (The warmth of your hands will help to soften the shortening to the right consistency.) Mixture should resemble crumbs the size of small peas. Slowly add milk until the batter is stiff enough to handle easily. Turn out onto floured board; fold or knead about ten times.
Roll to 3/4 inch thickness and cut with any round cutter. Place on cookie sheet or shallow pan. Lightly re-roll the remaining pieces of dough and cutting again until the dough is entirely used. Biscuits may either touch or be placed an inch apart.
Bake in hot oven (450 degrees) 12 to 18 minutes.
