Heat over to 350 degrees. Line muffin cups with fluted paper.
Soak 1/2 cup of the bran flakes and 1/2 cup unprocessed bran in 1 cup boiling water and stir until evenly blended. Set aside.
Cream butter and sugar together until light. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add buttermilk and soaked bran. Mix together.
Add flour, baking soda and salt and mix until just moist.
Fold in remaining bran flakes and unprocessed bran, banana chips and walnuts. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean.
