Set oven to bake at 425 degrees F.
Mix dry ingredients well. Add egg and buttermilk and enough water for thin batter. Put 1 heaping tablespoon shortening in glass pie plate and melt in oven until hot. Pour batter into hot grease. Bake for 17 minutes.
NOTE: You may omit baking soda and use regular milk instead of buttermilk
Buttermilk recipe: 2 teaspoons white vinegar to 2/3 cup regular milk and let sit for 10 minutes
