This beef pastitsada is with allspice and red wine. It is a slow cooking recipe and is great if you have a group of friends coming over.
It is great with rice or creamy mashed potatoes and green veg.
A nice bottle of Italian red goes well too.
Preheat oven to 150C
Heat the oil in a large oven proof dish over a high heat.
Add 1/3 of the beef and brown (approx 5 mins)
Set this aside and repeat for the rest of the beef 1/3 at a time
Add the shallots and garlic and stir-fry for 2-3 mins or until just starting to colour
Return the beef to the pan and add all the rest of the ingredients.
Mix well with a wooden spoon, getting any caramelised bits from the bottom of the pan
Cover and place in oven
Cook for 3.5 hours then season to taste
