Pre heat oven to 190 degrees centigrade or 375 f/gas mark 5.
Grease a 10in tin
Mix the sugar and butter together well and then add the eggs gradually and beat together. Sift the rest of the dry ingredients into the mixture and mix well.
Transfer mixture into the tin and place in the middle of the oven and bake for around about 35 minutes.
Check the cake is cooked by inserting a skewer or knife into the middle of the cake, if it comes out clean the cake is ready.
Transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool. Meanwhile prepare the chocolate frosting.
Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a saucepan of boiling water. Stir in the icing sugar and butter. Remove from the heat when all melted and add the water little by little. Allow to cool but spread over the cake whilst still warm.
