Place hash browns into 13x19 cake pan. Add finely chopped onions to taste. Cover with sour cream, soup and butter. Then coat with shredded cheese. Bake in oven at 350 for 1 hour or until potatoes are soft. Mix all ingredients every 20 minutes while baking to ensure even baking. Serve hot or refrigerate left overs.
