Mix the first 6 ingredients (brown sugar, white sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, shortening, and margarine) together. The gradually mix in last 2 ingredients (baking soda, salt, flour). Gradually fold in chocolate chips as you desire.
Bake at 325 degrees for 8-10 minutes. They will be a little soft when they are removed from the oven but will harden as they cool.
