Dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in sugar, lard, salt, egg, and 1 Cup of the flour. Beat until smooth. Mix in enough of the remaining flour to make a dough that is soft, but easy to handle. Turn onto a well-floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes. Place in greased bowl; turn greased side up. Cover; let rise until doubled.
Prepare filling while dough is rising. Cook and stir ground beef until light brown; drain. Stir in cabbage, onion, water, salt, caraway seed, and pepper. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer until cabbage is tender, 10-15 minutes. Cool.
Punch down dough. Roll into 16-inch square. Cut into sixteen 4-inch squares. Place 1/4 Cup filling in center of each square. Bring corners together; pinch to seal.
Place seam sides down on greased cookie sheets. Shape into rounds; let rise until double.
Bake at 350? until light brown, 20-25 minutes. Brush tops with butter.
