Combine shortening and boiling water. Stir until melted. Combine eggs, sugar and salt; beat in cold water. Soften yeast in lukewarm water (between 100 and 110 degrees). Combine all ingredients and add flour. (Dough may be sticky and that is okay. Just make sure you spray the bowl with cooking spray before you refrigerate so it doesn't stick to the bowl quite so bad.) Refrigerate overnight. It will raise some. If it raises and pops the lid off, just punch it down and put it back in the refrigerator. Dough will last in fridge for 5 days.
For cinnamon rolls, pinch off half the dough, flour surface, and roll into a rectangle. Spread with softened butter and then sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Roll up, beginning with the long side. Pinch dough to seal roll. Cut rolls to desired width using a piece of thread and place in oil-sprayed pan. (I usually measure about 1.5 to 2 inches.) Allow them plenty of space to rise nearly double in size. (This process takes about an hour, so start early letting them rise, or roll them out the night before and let them rise ALL NIGHT in the cold oven--they'll be huge by morning. Make sure you take them out BEFORE you preheat the oven!) Bake at 350 degrees until nicely browned (about 25-35 minutes).
This recipe will make approximately two 9 x 13 pans.
For crescent rolls, pinch off half the dough, flour surface, and roll into a circle. Butter the entire surface and cut in triangles as in pizza. Roll up starting with the outside edge. Flip the bottom tip underneath and place on cookie sheet with corners curved down. Cover and let rise for about 1 hour. Bake at 350 degrees for 11 minutes or until golden brown. Makes approximately 24 per batch of dough.
Frosting (for cinnamon rolls):
Melt butter in pan. Add half and half and bring to boil.
Remove from heat and add vanilla and powdered sugar.
Beat well and drizzle over warm cinnamon rolls. Enjoy!
