Put water in saucepan with handle and bring to boil. Add dash of salt. Add package of frozen peas with water to cover. Bring to a boil, then turn down to simmer about 1 hour. Add more salt and some 1-2 teaspoons cooking oil (or bacon drippings). Don't let boil dry or come over top.
Wash peas, drain. Place in a large Dutch oven and cover with water 2 inches above the peas. Soak 8 hours. Drain.
Add water and remaining ingredients. Bring to a good boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer 1 1/2 hours.
