In a large saucepan, heat butter and buttermilk until barely bubbling. Remove from heat & quickly stir in dry ingredients. Add eggs, sour cream, & almond extract &stir until smooth. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 20 minutes or until cake is light golden brown. Allow to cool for 15 minutes..
Spread butter cream frosting over warm cake & sprinkle with almonds.
Frosting: soften butter. Stir in powdered sugar & extract. Stir in water, 1tablespoon at a time until smooth & desired consistency. Pour over warm cake.
