This was my grandmother's recipe. It was published in a cookbook of desserts that was put out by the Eastern Star in 1968. I was only 6 that year. Six years later, when I was 12, I made my first one and have been baking these ever since. I usually make it lemon, but I do love the butternut as well. When looking for this flavoring, look for "Vanilla, Butter, and Nut" flavoring.
CAKE
Cream shortening, butter, and sugar at medium speed for 10 minutes. Add an egg at a time, beating well after each addition. Blend in flour, cream of tartar, and flavoring. Bake at 325° for 1 hour 15 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean.
FROSTING
Blend butter, sugar, and flavoring with enough milk to obtain the consistency you want. Frost completely cooled cake.
