Mix brown sugar, salt, flour, and cornstarch. Add scalded milk gradually and cook in top part of double boiler until mixture is thickened and smooth, stirring constantly.
Continue cooking 15 minutes longer, stirring occasionally. Beat egg yolks until light. Add a small amount of hot mixture to eggs; combine with ingredients in double boiler and stir 2 or 3 minutes longer over boiling water. Add butter and vanilla. Cool. Pour into pie shell and spread with meringue.
Beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually beat in sugar until whites are stiff and peak. Brown meringue at 350 for about 15 minutes.
