Gran's recipe
Separate the eggs. WHIP the whites til foamy & then ADD the cream of tartar. Beat til stiff but not dry (satiny).
Remove from bowl onto a sheet of waxed paper.
IN SAME BOWL, beat 5 egg yolks til lemon colored; then add the water a little at a time. BEAT til the mixture thickens.; then ADD the sugar very slowly.
Sift flour a couple of times then measure out to have 1 1/4 cups & ADD salt. ADD to egg mixture very slowly. ADD the flavorings. blend well.
Remove from mixer & FOLD in the egg whites gently.
Place in an UNGREASED tube pan & BAKE at 350* for abt. 60 mins. or til top springs back when lgihtly touched. Needs no icing. COOL INVERTED IN TUBE PAN.
